- I live on the banks of the Derwent River in Hobart Tasmania. I've have a couple acres of bush, paddock, gardens and plenty of weeds to keep me busy. I'm learning as I go about growing what I can, caring for the living things around me and enjoying it all while I'm at it.

Everything’s Growing
The garden’s looking great. The sunflowers are all opening and make a nice cheery splash against the fence. My mounding experiment is not really panning out. I remounded around some rocket and radishes this week since they seem to be … Continue reading
More firsts
Today the second banana spear showed its first hand. Now that I know what I’m looking for, I’m watching this one to see how fast its hands appear. The first spear has a half-dozen or so hands all nicely green … Continue reading
Tomato Harvest & mildew prevention
Today’s harvest of tomatoes. Last night I had a headache and ate a pile of tomatoes for dinner. Tonight, bruschetta perhaps? They are fresh, yummy and good as a snack if we don’t cook with them. I also sprayed the … Continue reading
2nd Banana Spear
Yesterday Frank pointed out to me that our banana plant has a 2nd spear. It’s already January so I’m very sceptical that it will ever have any ripe bananas on it, but I’m glad to see it happily producing anyway. … Continue reading
First Sunflower
The first sunflower opened today. I can’t say it looks like the “giant” it is supposed to be, but maybe it’s still young. All the others have large heads on them and I’m sure they’ll follow suit in the next … Continue reading
Birdbath
Here’s a birdbath Frank made out of an old hanging lamp shade and old fence palings. Today we put the stones in (for the birds to sit on while flapping about). I’m hunting for some plants that might be suitable. … Continue reading
Mounding dirt
A lot of what I plant is feeble and lies down after being watered. Much never rises again. One theory is that I’m planting too shallow (regardless of whether I follow the directions on the packet or not). Another theory … Continue reading
