- I live on the banks of the Derwent River in Hobart Tasmania. I've have a couple acres of bush, paddock, gardens and plenty of weeds to keep me busy. I'm learning as I go about growing what I can, caring for the living things around me and enjoying it all while I'm at it.

Back in the garden
I’ve stayed out of the garden for a few weeks now. Mainly because of the weather. After those days in the 40s, everything suffered, wilted and much died. Add to that the fact that there’s been zero rain and gardening … Continue reading
Leaf Mulch
I’ve never used mulch before. In my mind it’s useful to a) keep out weeds and b) keep in water. That’s it. Since I’m okay with weeding, that wiped out half the motivation. The water retention angle is noteworthy, especially … Continue reading

Everything’s Growing
The garden’s looking great. The sunflowers are all opening and make a nice cheery splash against the fence. My mounding experiment is not really panning out. I remounded around some rocket and radishes this week since they seem to be … Continue reading
2nd Banana Spear
Yesterday Frank pointed out to me that our banana plant has a 2nd spear. It’s already January so I’m very sceptical that it will ever have any ripe bananas on it, but I’m glad to see it happily producing anyway. … Continue reading
Gozleme and Garden Update
Here is yesterday’s harvest of silverbeet, chives and peppermint all of which I chopped up and put into a flat round piece of homemade bread (like a tortilla) with feta cheese. I folded the circle in half and sealed it … Continue reading
Rocket
Is this rocket? I planted some seeds here (and elsewhere) on Sunday, 14 Nov. I put sticks next to the seeds so I wouldn’t accidentally weed them, but then I forgot which seeds went where. The package says rocket seeds … Continue reading
