- I live on the banks of the Derwent River in Hobart Tasmania. I've have a couple acres of bush, paddock, gardens and plenty of weeds to keep me busy. I'm learning as I go about growing what I can, caring for the living things around me and enjoying it all while I'm at it.

New Kumquat Trees
Joe has an old garden full of old plants and he’s cleaning things out. He knows Frank loves all things garden so offered him 2 old kumquats in old pots. Frank said yes and he and I drove over to … Continue reading
No Time to Waste
A couple of days ago I wrote a post about the possums stripping bark from my citrus trees. I defended against their assault by placing plastic pots around some of the main branches of the kumquat tree, the tastiest of … Continue reading
Seasonal Food Trees
I used to have a very fixed idea of seasons and food production which matched the classical 4-seasons art works you might find in art galleries around the world. Spring was for new growth: flowers, fresh green leaves and maybe … Continue reading
Kumquat Marmalade
Our kumquat tree produced a pretty large crop this year, certainly more than we can eat raw. When this happens (every 2 or 3 years, I suppose) Frank gets inspired to make marmalade. He loves it. I think it’s so-so. … Continue reading
Kumquats
We’ve been collecting kumquats as they fall from the tree for a few days now. They’ve been nice snacks but not much more. After 3 months of mandarins, a week without fresh fruit was getting to me so today we … Continue reading
Kumquat regrowth
The kumquat tree is sprouting after its harsh pruning about a month ago. I’m confident it will come back stronger than ever. The banana has 5 or so hands of fruit and 3 of something (males I believe) that surely … Continue reading
Food Trees
The Mulberry produced bowls full of fruit this year. I made several cobblers. I suppose I could try jam but it tends to ripen at the rate of a bowl full every few days making it problematic to turn it … Continue reading
