- I live on the banks of the Derwent River in Hobart Tasmania. I've have a couple acres of bush, paddock, gardens and plenty of weeds to keep me busy. I'm learning as I go about growing what I can, caring for the living things around me and enjoying it all while I'm at it.

Autumn Planting on a Full Moon
Today is a Full Moon in Scorpio which means fertile planting, especially for root crops. It’s also a good time to take cuttings. Not perfect for flowers (a waxing moon would be better) but you can’t have everything! Rhubarb After noting … Continue reading →

Planting out seedlings
Today I planted out the seedlings our neighbour gave us. They are kohlrabi, coriander and beetroot. Yesterday I prepared the soil by putting 2 buckets of fresh compost in and then mixing it into the existing soil. I watered … Continue reading →
Ginger Bed
This is the shady garden bed I call the ginger bed (that’s what it was designed for). Several sprouts can be seen shooting in the back. The highest is maybe 18 inches tall. Yesterday I bravely pulled out most of … Continue reading →

Progress report
The sunflowers are doing really well, except they still wouldn’t stand without a stake. These tomatoes are shooting up, but have about half of the tomato bunches on them that those in the other bed do. I think that answers … Continue reading →
Pest Control
Tash attacked again. The strawberry bed is her favourite but she’s managed to make her presence felt in other spots. I don’t think the Scat works very well. Plus it’s a nasty toxic. Today I tried Plan B – stick … Continue reading →
Seedlings doing well
The sunflowers are continuing to grow (with the tomatoes behind them doing well too). The do seem a bit weak so today I tied them each to a small stake in the hopes that they’ll actually grow up rather than … Continue reading →
Lunar Planting
Today I finally put in my ginger. I looked at the lunar planting calendar and from 3:30 yesterday afternoon for the next few days we’re in the full moon phase. Good for root plants. So, in went ginger, horseradish, more … Continue reading →
Rhubarb
We bought this rhubarb as a seedling. It should be planted in winter – it’s early summer. It also apparently likes sun – this is full shade. I’m giving it a go. The pack came with 6 seedlings, all sort … Continue reading →
