- I live on the banks of the Derwent River in Hobart Tasmania. I've have a couple acres of bush, paddock, gardens and plenty of weeds to keep me busy. I'm learning as I go about growing what I can, caring for the living things around me and enjoying it all while I'm at it.

*sigh*
Honestly, there’s no point in being anything but resigned to reality. The painful truth is that critters like home-grown vegetables. My garden had a good pest-free run. It had been ages since a possum raided my avocado tree or a … Continue reading

Sweet Corn Lessons
I’ve been experimenting with growing sweet corn based on the American Indian method of planting corn, climbing beans and squash together (the “Three Sisters“). I think it worked but I’ll tweak it a little next year. Problem 1: All the … Continue reading
Beer Batter Squash Flowers
There’s a prolific wild squash plant growing in (and out of) one of my garden beds. The squash have been rotting before they seem ready and the plant is a nuisance so yesterday Frank started hacking it back. As he … Continue reading
Unstoppable Squash
I planted some sweet corn at the end of September last year and I put some zucchini seedlings in the same bed at the same time. Then events overtook me and I wasn’t around to see their progress. When I cam … Continue reading

Snack Food
Today on my garden walk I found a tasty harvest (the first orange of the season). This orange was enjoyed overnight by what I’m guessing was a local possum. When the parrots go for the citrus they tend to poke … Continue reading
Winter growth
It’s squash hatching time in the garden. Everything that hasn’t been devoured by aphids or killed by leaf mould is starting to produce tiny fruits. Flowers started appearing a couple of weeks ago but they were all males and no … Continue reading

Planting out the cukes & zucchini
The seedlings are bursting out of their tray. Well at least the cucumbers and zucchini are. I decided those had to be planted out today because a) they really are getting too big for the little tray and b) the … Continue reading

Wild Squash
This squash vine (jap pumpkin?) grew all on its own in what I’ve been calling the strawberry bed. It is a voracious grower and seems to have no pests or mould (unlike whatever I plant with TLC). I thought it … Continue reading
