- I live on the banks of the Derwent River in Hobart Tasmania. I've have a couple acres of bush, paddock, gardens and plenty of weeds to keep me busy. I'm learning as I go about growing what I can, caring for the living things around me and enjoying it all while I'm at it.

New Succulents
Frank did a good deed, helping a woman carry a parcel home. She rewarded him with cuttings from a couple of her succulents. He’s a huge succulent fan so he was over the moon. We set the cuttings out to … Continue reading
Misplaced Tree Fern
I’m not pointing fingers, but whoever planted these two tree ferns (cyathea cooperi) at our back door wasn’t thinking ahead. Okay, I am pointing fingers – Mother Nature, try again. They’re great plants but they are a bit big for this … Continue reading
Birdbath Upgrade
The birdbath is doing really well. Birds love it. I even catch them bathing on cold winter days. (At least when it’s sunny out. Update 15 July: Today I saw a currawong bathing and it’s cold, dark and drizzly out there!) The wood … Continue reading
New Beginnings
This mulberry tree produced bowls full of berries in spring. I made several cobblers and want to do that every year for the rest of my life. Frank and I decided to try to start a new plant from a … Continue reading

Fell Down BOOM
Our beautiful indoor jade plant had a slight accident yesterday (above). For a few days we’ve been wondering about a branch that seemed to be drooping: Has the plant been over watered? Under watered? Is it all a figment of … Continue reading

Rosemary
I’ve got a very scraggly rosemary bush living outside. It’s actually one I planted from a cutting of one that is now dead :-(. This plant is doing okay, but was covered in weeds so has grown leggy to reach … Continue reading

House Plants
I’ve been slowly moving plants from outside to inside as I salvage them from the garden chaos. Some of them had lived inside before we moved to Darwin and I set them, pots and all, into the garden in hopes … Continue reading
