Today we harvested the 2nd banana spear. It held 5 nice hands weighing 4.4kilos in total. At todays prices, that’s about $50 worth of bananas!
No more spears on any of the plants so this looks like the end of this year’s harvest. We’ll be eating these bananas for about the next month (the first hand is already in its plastic bag with an apple) and then we have about 10 months to wait for next year’s bounty 😦
Amazing. I can’t believe you got so many bananas.
And, what’s with the plastic bag and apple? Share your secrets, oh wise one..
Everything I’ve learned (and tried) about bananas is in my post here: https://laurarittenhouse.wordpress.com/2011/04/01/banana-harvest/
The apple in a plastic bag releases ethylene gas which ripens the bananas. We put a hand in the plastic bag about 4 days before we want to start eating it so we have a steady stream of perfect fruit.
With bananas at $14 / kilo ($7 / pound) thanks to our cyclones, we couldn’t be more satisfied with our harvest.
