- I live on the banks of the Derwent River in Hobart Tasmania. I've have a couple acres of bush, paddock, gardens and plenty of weeds to keep me busy. I'm learning as I go about growing what I can, caring for the living things around me and enjoying it all while I'm at it.

Crimson Rosellas
I recently posted about my impromptu aviary. I mentioned that when the sunflowers ripened, I would be adding parrots to the list of birds visiting my back garden. Well, the sunflowers are ripening. Here are the first visitors: crimson Rosellas. … Continue reading
Not Another Possum Post!!!
Yes, another possum post. I keep thinking I know everything the possum will do, what it will eat, and where I can expect my possum-losses to accumulate. I keep being surprised at how many ways my possum can eat me … Continue reading
Bees, Sunflowers and Birds
I haven’t purchased a packet of sunflower seeds in a couple years. I just keep harvesting seeds from one or 2 saved heads and replant. It works really well and I’m getting the hang of creating a nice, small field … Continue reading
Summer Garden Work
The garden continues to tick over, but it’s not producing as well as it was a month ago. Mid-summer is a hard time in gardens in Sydney. But I think it’s partly my fault for sowing everything in a manner … Continue reading
Feeding the Masses of Fauna off Sunflowers
Seriously, those sunflowers really bring in the masses. The gift that keeps on giving. These are some of the uses to which my sunflowers are put in my garden: Seeds: As soon as they’re planted they’re dug up and eaten … Continue reading
Cockatoos and Sunflowers
Yesterday I spotted a sulphur crested cockatoo swooping in my backyard (not unusual). It looked like it must have landed on the side fence (unusual). I went and took a look and found it in the banana plant (unusual) near … Continue reading

Sunflower Attack
Honestly, I hold out very little hope for my sunflower crop. Something, possum or bandicoot, is relentless in its attack. My chicken wire fence is perhaps an inconvenience, but not a deterrent. A couple of days after sowing the seeds … Continue reading

Sowing Sunflowers
Last September I planted a large sunflower crop which was devoured before most of it could sprout. The few sprouts that did appear we nibbled off when there were only 2 leaves on the tiny plant. I’m sure the bandicoot … Continue reading
Cosmos Anyone?
On 6 September I sowed a bunch of flower seeds. When I left home in late October for my Summer/Winter in Germany, there were random seedlings appearing in a few spots, but nothing amazing. This bed was over-planted with sunflower … Continue reading
Flowers Galore
The flowering almond/peach/apricot (I’m not sure what it is but it produces only a few stunted fruits each year that fall off long before they’d be ripe) is starting to burst into bloom. Within a week the front yard will … Continue reading
